[James Browne], A Critical Examination of Dr. Macculloch&Apos;S Work on the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland
[James Browne]
A Critical Examination of Dr. Macculloch&Apos;S Work on the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland
Edinburgh , Printed for Daniel Lizars, 1825. First edition. Leather. The very scarce first edition of James Browne's critical examination of Dr. MacCulloch's work on the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland, in an attractive full calf binding. A work attributed to James Browne, a critical examination of the four tomes written by Dr MacCulloch on the Highlands and Western Islands. The very scarce first edition of 1825. In 1824, James MacCullogh (Scottish geologist known for his pioneering texts on geology and for producing the first geological maps of Scotland) wrote four tomes discussing the Highlands and Western isles of Scotland in a series of letters addressed to Walter Scott. In the work, he represents the highlanders as barbarous, indolent, dishonest, and inhospitable. Those tomes were criticised by the public and here by Browne, who defines them as 'arrogant pretensions', inaccurate, prejudiced, and a mere attempt to gain subscribers. Browne's work opens with an overview of recent works on the highlands and highlanders and continues discussing the geology, economy, and other information on the land. In a charming full calf binding with marbled endpapers and edges. Complete with half title. In a full calf binding with marbled endpapers and edges. Externally very smart with only minor shelf wear and some rubbing to the spine and boards. Internally, firmly bound. With the occasional minor spotting scattered to the odd leaf, particularly to the first and last, otherwise the pages are generally bright and clean. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .
